Erdogan Pits God Against the Dollar
Turkish President Erdogan, who has mostly remained silent against Lira’s dramatic moves in the last few days, made a public appearance on Thursday to talk about the economy.
“There are various scenarios floating around, don’t pay attention to any of them,” he said in a tired voice. “They may have dollars, but we have the public support, the righteousness, and most importantly God on our side.”
His words have done little to reverse the Turkish currency’s demise, however. The US Dollar hit a record 6.45 against the lira in Friday morning trading before settling down to 6.0 mark.
Economy and Treasury minister Berat Albayrak is expected to make some new economic policy announcements in a few hours.
