MHP Calls for Early Elections in Turkey <a class="hashtagger" href="https://sigmaturkey.com/tag/turkishelections2018/">#TurkishElections2018</a>

MHP Chairman Devlet Bahceli called for an early election today during his speech at his party’s caucus.

The call was accepted by the CHP, and President Erdogan announced that he would meet with Bahceli tomorrow. The speculations for an early election caused the Turkish Lira to take another dive against the US Dollar and sent the Istanbul Stock Exchange 3% lower.

Bahceli called for an early Presidential Election and expressed his desire to pull back the election date from November 3, 2019 to August 26, 2018 -a mere 4 months out. Bahceli said “It is not possible for Turkey to wait until November 2019 under current conditions. The country is under constant pressure to deal with regime change discussions, and this is hurting all of us. We would prefer an early election in August of this year.”

His call was quickly answered by the opposition by CHP Vice Chair Bulent Tezcan. Mr. Tezcan said, “We are always ready for an election.” Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag was more cautious regarding MHP’s call and said, “We will evaluate this proposal internally.”

President Erdogan said he didn’t want to discuss an early election proposal, but he added that he would meet with Bahceli tomorrow and talk this with him at their meeting.

Speculations for the early elections hit the Turkish Lira which was already under pressure. The stock market also was hit by a 3% decline at the time of this article.
