A new request was made by the Turkish authorities for the extradition of the eight Turkish soldiers who fled by helicopter to Alexandroupolis, following the attempted coup of 15 July 2016 in Turkey.

The request will be forwarded to the Greek judicial authorities by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The issue of the eight Turkish soldiers was tabled at noon on Tuesday at the meeting between Justice Minister Stavros Kontonis and Turkish Deputy Minister of Justice Bilal Uçar.

The Greek Minister of Justice, in statements after the meeting, once again stressed that “the judgment of the Supreme Court does not enter into matters of indicating the existence or non-guilt of those concerned. Therefore, the decision of the Supreme Court and its content must be taken seriously into account by the Turkish side”.

“The legislative framework was put forward by the Greek side and it was fully understood by the Turkish side”, the Minister of Justice continued, who even accepted an invitation to visit Turkey in the near future.
